Since 1958, McPherson County has had 43 confirmed tornadoes resulting in 16 injuries and 1 death. This does not include funnel clouds that do not touch down.
There were 103 confirmed tornadoes in Kansas in 2009, down from the record of 187 in 2008. Two confirmed tornadoes were in McPherson County.
Tornadoes are most common in May, but have occurred in all months.
Lightning strikes some 25 million times in the US each year.
Lighting injures an average of 300 people a year and kills 60, nearly the same death rate as tornadoes.
Floods and Flash Floods kill more people in the US than any other weather related cause.
A person can be swept off their feet in as little as 6 inches of moving water.
A vehicle can be swept off its wheels with 18-24 inches of moving water.
